Hyper-V Live Migration did not succeed at the source

Posted: 26th September 2011 by Seth Killey in Virtualization

After setting up a 2 node Hyper-V cluster I was ready to perform a Live Migration test, however I got a series of errors which prevented Live Migration from completing successfully.  Event ID 21111 and Event ID 21502:

‘Virtual Machine <servername>’ live migration did not succeed at the source.

Followed by Event ID 20122

‘<servername>’ failed to migrate: the migration was canceled (Virtual machine ID <guid>)

What I discovered is that I had a different name specified for my NIC under Virtual Network Properties in Hyper-V.  If you go to Hyper-V Manager and choose Virtual Network Manager from the action menu, click on the network card and verify all nodes use the same name.  In my case I had 2 different names specified.  Once they matched Live Migration worked as expected

  1. Hi there, You have done a great job. I’ll definitely digg it and individually suggest to my friends. I am sure they’ll be benefited from this site.
